One of the great traditions in sports from one of the great mascots.
After each Portland Timber’ goal the mascot (now Timber Joey) revs up the chainsaw and slices off a timber log. These slices are often given out to the team’s community outreach program, which often gives them to fans as a keepsake. Or for special goals like this one, they are given to the player.
The mascot program in Portland is one of the all-time best. While non-traditional (its a guy, not a furry animal) it checks all the boxes of what you’d want in a mascot. True connection with team, innovative, creative, interesting and completely connected with the game and fans.
Is there better mascot tradition than a lumberjack revving up a chainsaw after goals (you could stop there and the answer is probably no)…which totally pumps up the crowd? Then as a mascot for a team named the “Timbers” cuts a slice off a huge log and gives it out the fans?
No, there isn’t.
