Water Cooler Post 1500 is Remarkable

Our 1500th Water Cooler Post peels back the inspiration for these daily posts. We look at one team giving fans that one simple pleasure Bill Veeck reached for in his work.

No one better to celebrate than the creative fans first crew at the Savannah Bananas for our big 1500th Water Cooler Post.

The Water Cooler on Gameops.com is build on this Bill Veeck idea:

“It isn’t enough for a promotion to be entertaining or even amusing; it must create conversation.  When the fan goes home and talks about what he has seen, he is getting an additional kick out of being able to say he was there.  Do not deny him the simple pleasure, especially since he is giving you the invaluable word-of-mouth advertising to add to the newspaper reports.”

– Bill Veeck (Hustler’s Handbook)

Create something REMARKABLE (worthy of being or likely to be noticed especially as being uncommon or extraordinary.).  Or more simply, worthy of REMARK.  Something that makes people talk.

A great sports promotion, theme, mascot skit, dance, contest or video is so engaging that fans HAVE to share it with their friends.  That used to take place at water coolers the next day, but now social media takes that conversation to the world with a click.  These moments are more valuable than ever.

Create moments people share, like this from the Bananas:

Of course a baby race is nothing new.  Teams have been capitalizing on cute, chubby drooling racers for years. The Bananas dial it up and take advantage of their own rules to elevate this race into something remarkable.

No doubt this promotion is one that got people talking. 125,000 people liked on social and countless enjoyed the simple pleasure of sharing with friends.  That word of mouth is what has made the Bananas a global phenomenon. It’s also the goal for everyone in Game Operations and sports entertainment.

Make something worthy of remark.  Then watch it spread.
