The Milwaukee Brewers are aggressively marketing to a demographic that is much overlooked: senior citizens. The team has created a "60-plus Fan Club" and senior-related events including "World’s Oldest Tailgate Party," "Senior Strolls," and "Senior Recognition Day."
For the "World's Oldest Tailgate Party" senior fans will get to enjoy food, music, and other entertainment at Miller Park prior to the game. Seniors will be able to walk around the outfield as part of the "Senior Strolls."
World's Oldest Tailgate, presented by The Village at Manor Park
Attend the World's Oldest Tailgate on June 17! For $20, fans 60 years of age and over receive a Loge Outfield game ticket to see the Seattle Mariners play on June 17, plus you'll receive entry into the World's Oldest Tailgate Party held prior to the game. The tailgate party held at Helfaer Field on the grounds of Miller Park from 10a.m.-12:30p.m. features all-you-can-eat food and beverage, music, entertainment, door prizes and more! Join in the group photo scheduled for 11:30a.m.! (Milwaukee Brewers web site)
One special day is "Senior Recognition Day," where seniors will be honored and will receive a deck of large-print playing cards. The Brewers hope the senior promotions pay off in attracting seniors to more games, especially weekday afternoon dates. (From SportsBusiness Journal, 3/3-9)
Turn Back the Clock
It was the year 1903 at a recent Pittsburgh Pirates game as part of their "Turn Back the Clock" promotion, which was held to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the first World Series.
For the game, the teams wore period uniforms and so did the stadium employees (ticket personnel, concession salespeople, etc.), who donned suspenders, bow ties, and bowler hats. No booming music or video was played; the Pirates PA announcer introduced batters and gave updates with a megaphone while standing on the dugouts. The ceremonial first pitch was tossed like they did it back then: from the stands. Pre-game entertainment included magicians, jugglers, and live turn-of-the-century music from a barbershop quartet (One-A-Chord), River City Brass Band and the Boilermaker Jazz Band. Fans were given a commemorative 1903 newspaper souvenir. (Pittsburgh Pirates Press Release)
The attention to detail and the number of ways the promotion touched every level of the team operations is part of the reason the Pirates were one of our Best of Selections for 2003.

The World's Easiest Premium Item
To attract fans to a recent game, the Battle Creek (Mich.) Yankees of Minor League Baseball offered a dollar bill to every fan that attended the game. "Everyone gives away T-shirts. It's an easy giveawy since one size fits all.... Who can't use a dollar?" says Scott Sailor, director of special projects for the team. The team has been averaging 1,100 fans during the first few games of this season. (Battle Creek Enquirer, 4/14)
Feeling cheap: 2 Cents Night
A buck is too much stimulus for you? How about $.02?
It'll be a cleansing night of emotional catharsis in Palm Beach on
Wednesday, as the Cardinals are asking fans to "give their two cents
worth." Upon entering the ballpark, fans will be handed two pennies.
The stingy and reserved among the crowd will elect to keep this modest
gift, but everyone else is encouraged to visit a staff member at "the
opinion table." There, fans can give their "two cents" on any current
event that they choose. Some of these eloquent treatises will later be
shown on the video board, while others will be read by the P.A.
announcer. The opinionated musings of Cardinal players will be also be
shown, and the fan who spouts off the most entertaining rant will
receive a fabulous, yet-to-be-determined prize. - Palm Beach Cardinals (Thanks Benjamin Hill)
Showing Your Colors
Members of the Lakewood (N.J.) BlueClaws front office are out and about, on the lookout for fans that are wearing some sort of BlueClaws merchandise. When the staff members see a supportive fan, they give them two tickets to a game during the opening weekend series. Staff members have been given four tickets, which they carry with them at all times until they see BlueClaws-supportive fans to give them to. (TPR)
Antique Car Show
Why not let hobbyists and enthusiasts generate a promotion for you?
The Somerset Patriots offer the opportunity to showcase classic cars with a pre-game car show in the red lot and a pre-game parade around the field. There will be a car show in the TD Bank Ballpark Red Lot from 3-4PM. Fans buy tickets to the game and bring their own cars.
MoneyBall Night
The Brooklyn Cyclones of Minor League Baseball will celebrate money managers financial analysts and accountants with their somewhat tongue-in-cheek "Moneyball Night" on July 23. Bankers and accountants who bring groups of 20 or more to the game will receive discounted tickets and be eligible to participate in on-field contests. The promotion will include: ringing of the Opening Bell to replace "Play Ball" before the first pitch; Bear Stearns limbo; Pocket Protector prizes; Bear vs. Bull race instead of traditional mascot race; Count the Beans in the Jar contest etc. "It's a tough time for money managers so we're going to create a night that will bring smiles to their faces" says Cyclones' GM Steve Cohen.
